Sexual violence prevention education

Issues: Sexual violence is widespread and not often adequately addressed in the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii statistics indicate that one in four girls and one in six boys will be a victim of sexual assault before the age of 18, and that only 31% of sexual assaults are reported. Shame and stigma related to sexual violence prevents people from reporting incidences and being able to access post exposure prophylaxis. This issue is perpetuated by HIV and AIDS not being openly addressed at the community level. Survivors of childhood sexual assault are increasingly vulnerable to HIV infection as studies show that childhood/adolescent sexual abuse is associated with trading sex for drugs/shelter/money; sex work; and with a less likelihood of using condoms.
Description: The YWCA of Kauai currently provides counselling for sexual violence survivors and prevention education curricula in government schools. The organization also holds public events providing information on sexual violence prevention. However, these programs lack HIV and AIDS education. In March 2007, YWCA Kauai and an organization addressing HIV (MalamaPono) jointly held a public film-showing, highlighting the link between sexual violence and HIV and AIDS in the Hawaii community. Participants received information about each organization. Overcoming existing barriers in access to HIV care and prevention must be incorporated in this social justice framework.
Lessons learned: Sexual violence and HIV and AIDS are undeniably interrelated. The organizations working on these issues should come together in prevention education efforts, benefiting from each other’s expertise.
Next steps: MalamaPono and YWCA Kauai will continue collaboration on prevention education efforts, which is essential in working towards Universal Access. YWCA Kauai will incorporate HIV and AIDS into existing school curriculum, community events, and client counselling services. The Greater Involvement of People living with HIV will be an obvious inclusion at all levels in the building of these programmes.
