Overview: An effective AIDS vaccine will be crucial for sustaining an effective response to HIV/AIDS and to meeting our universal access commitments over the long run. The search for an AIDS vaccine will continue globally, despite the significant scientific challenges, but a fine tuning of messages and actions is in order. Enormous advances have occurred and the scientific tools at our disposal are unprecedented. A round table session with experts from multiple fields engaged in AIDS vaccine research ? civil society, research, policy ? will take stock of the state of the field and address the current challenges across sectors, charting a course of action to ensure that AIDS vaccine research will continue to advance globally. Issues to be covered on the satellite: ? Status of the AIDS vaccine field: current priorities for research ? Pointers on new directions for the field based on the 2008 IAVI Vaccine Blueprint (which will be released at the Mexico City Conference). ? Innovative ways to move the field forward, including scientific innovation, advocacy, leadership, community engagement, funding, etc. ? Actions required to sustain AIDS vaccine research over the long-term, as part of the comprehensive response to the epidemic.
