A growing movement of HIV programs are finding innovative ways to work with men and boys by encouraging a reflective process that explores how gender inequities and rigid messages about masculinity contribute to HIV, STIs, gender-based violence and other health-related problems. These programs share a 'transformative approach' that allows men to challenge harmful gender norms and embrace alternative models of masculinity that support their own health and that of others. This can lead to improved partner communication , increased condom use, reduction of sexual partners, delayed initiation of sex, increased use of HIV services, and an increased role in the care and support of people living with HIV and AIDS. Transformative approaches encourage men to take an active stand for gender-equality, addressing a key root cause of the HIV epidemic. At the forefront of this movement is an alliance of non-governmental organizations and UN agencies called MenEngage. Members of the MenEngage alliance are involved in an array of research, interventions, and policy initiatives seeking to engage men and boys in meaningful ways. In 2007, some members in MenEngage connected with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and a range of researchers, programmers and policy makers, in an international symposium on 'politicising masculinities', considering ways forward in making work with men and boys more political and engaged with other social movements. This session will reflect on efforts to engage men and boys in such movements, while also sharing information about MenEngage and ways for conference participants to become active members of its network. The session will consist of three components. It will begin with a panel of 3 grassroots male gender activists from Africa, Asia and Latin America that are working in their communities to help transform gender norms. The activists will be interviewed by a facilitator (Jerker Edström from IDS) who will ask them key questions, such as how their work is carried out in alliance with the women's movement, how their work addresses homophobia, how their work advocates for the rights of people living with HIV, and how they address community resistance to changing social norms around gender issues. After the panel presentation, Gary Barker will provide an overview of MenEngage and share examples of the work it has achieved through global, regional, and country networks. Mr. Barker will also highlight recent MenEngage technical publications and share information on an upcoming global conference on men and gender equality. This session will conclude with participants convening in small groups based on country and/or region. Participants will learn about the work of current MenEngage regional efforts and share input on ways to expand the size and scope of country-level networks.
