Rapporteur report

Track C report by Wipas Wimonsate

The Asia and Pacific region is experiencing a rising HIV epidemic. In 2007, there were 5 million people living with HIV, 380,000 new infections, and the same number died from HIV-related causes. The key issues proven to be effective in combating HIV in this region are:

• Strong political commitment

• Respect of human right and equality (stop stigma and discrimination)

• Gender equality

• Involvement of business community

• Expanding of networks (IDU and FSW)

• Improvement of healthcare services, especially the confidential (inform-consented) VCT

• A little help and support from various sections could also make a difference
